Dept of Industrial Fish and Fisheries (IFF)was sanctioned by UGC in this college in May 1997 during the period of Dr Atri Kumar Chattopadhyay and enrolment of students began from July 1997 under the headship of Dr Kalpana Bose. At that time the course was called IFF (V), because it was a vocational course. After five years of financial assistance of UGC the college had to run the department with its own cost. Then the course was coined as IFF(M) by the University of Calcutta, when Dr Ajay Kumar Debgupta joined as Principal of this college in 2001. After the retirement of Dr Bose, Dr Paritosh Kumar Roy and Dr Bidisha Ghosh Dastidar took the responsibility as Head of the department in their successive terms. Since then the department is running smoothly with a bunch of bright students, passing out every year and having ample job opportunity in the Govt and Private sectors. Some goes to higher studies including Post Graduate courses in other Universities. Now Dr. Sanjib Chattopadhyay is acting as Head of the department, Smt Debasri Golder takes special classes and Sm Sandipta Shee is acting as Guest Lecturer in the department. In the last academic session educational excursion was held at Digha.In the present session it was held at Puri. Dr Bidisha Ghosh Dastidar, Dr Sanjib Chattopadhyay, and Prof Debasri Golder conducted the excursion.

Academics : The physics department has a well-equipped laboratory for the undergraduate students. Recently the laboratory has been renovated and has become more spacious to accommodate quite a large no of students. Every year special practical classes are arranged and the students get all the freedom to practice for their university examinations. The students' progress is constantly monitored and occasional class tests are taken both in Honours and General courses to help them in their preparation.
Occasionally the department organises lectures by eminent scholars on various interesting topics to motivate the students. Moreover, the honours students are accompanied to different 'OUTREACH' programs organized by premiere scientific institutions of Kolkata.

Picnic : For the last two years an annual picnic had been arranged in winter which had been made highly successful by the enthusiastic participation of both the honours and general students.

Achievement : : It is a pride that our 3rd year Honours student Mr Nitish Paul got the "Best Poster" prize in a seminar titled "Physics behind Electronics/Optoelectronics and their Applications" organized by the physics Department of Sammilani Mahavidyalayay Kolkata held in Dec 1-2, 2011.
