DEPARTMENTAL ACTIVITIES
To see the past in the eyes of the present and vice versa, the History Department strives to impart comprehensive as well as specific knowledge in historical events, historiographies and recent trends in research to its students. Academic work in the class includes lectures, class tests, seminars and educational tours. Apart from the College Library students have access to the departmental library, which has a wide collection of books related to their syllabus.

Educational Excursions
The department organises educational excursions at regular intervals. Apart from frequent visits to the Indian Museum, Victoria Memorial or to a bit far off Hangeswari temple and Bandel Church.
In September, 2011 the Department organises a one-day excursion to National Library, Kolkata to visit the exhibition on The Treasures of Ancient China.

In October, 2011 year our students also visited the exhibition on the historic Kalighat Pat paintings held in the Victoria Memorial.

Seminars and Conferences
The Department organizes regular seminars by the students where they are encouraged to write and present papers reflecting their interests in history. In 2007, the Department has arranged a significant seminar, commemorating the 150th year of the Indian Mutiny of 1857. The seminar succeeded to bring out an edited booklet comprising articles written by the students and also by the departmental teachers.
At this event the students organised a Collage exhibition reproducing the contemporary newspaper cuttings, posters, pictures and stamps—all related to the 1857 uprising. The department also arranged a film screening of Shyam Bengal’s Junoon, a cinematic representation of the historic event.
The department usually hosts an annual student seminar. Last year, on 3rd December, 2011, the Department organised a seminar on Madhyajuge Bharate Rasrta o Samaj: Sanghat theke Samanyay by the students of 1st year History honours.

UGC Sponsored National Conference
On 9-10, February 2012, the History department along with three other departments of the college and in collaboration with Indian Statistical Institute, Calcutta, organised a UGC sponsored national seminar entitled, Re-writing Culture, Re-telling Narratives: Gender and the Politics of Representation, in which distinguished historians like Uma Chakravarti, Ratnabali Chatterjee, Samita Sen and Suparna Gooptu had presented papers, focusing on contemporary trends in research in cultural and social history. Aishika Chakraborty was the joint convener of the Conference while Aloke Chatterjee was its treasurer.

Film Screenings
The Department has arranged occasional screenings of films like The Great Dictator, Operation Daybreak and Junoon for the students.
